Bibliography for Felbinger Family Documents

In preparing the documentary material for the Felbinger, Prahl, and related families, I have been amazed at how much material can actually be found in printed sources. Schlegel's book is certainly the best example of this. There are many other books and articles that have specific information relating to the families, have background material that assists in finding the information, or illuminate the period in which these events took place. I have been collecting citations and notes for some time, and find it expedient to change the organization of the "Bibliography for Felbinger Family Documents" from a simple list to a more detailed format.

The Bibliography will be presented in two sections.

The first section, "Genealogical Reference Sources", will list those books I find helpful in the general aspects of my research: bibliographies, encyclopedias and dictionaries, and specialized reference tools relating to specific topics (language, handwriting, etc.).

The second section, "Family Reference Sources", will list those books that either cite the family specifically or give helpful background information. This section will be further subdivided into three sections: "General", "Felbinger family", "Prahl family".

One of my Prahl ancestors, great-great-grandfather Ignaz Merkel, was a Civil War veteran, having served in the 45th New York Infantry Regiment. To everyone's certain knowledge, published material on that conflict is a minor industry in itself. I have begun compiling separately a significant bibliography of materials that relate to the regiment. In the "Civil War material" subsection listed on this webpage I will add only those items that I have found particularly helpful in working on a regimental history. It should come as a surprise to no one that I actually have in my posession a significant amount of the material listed here. -- JEF, July 14, 2008
