'Smokin' Joe Frazier: 1964 Olympics Heavyweight Boxing Gold Medalist. Heavyweight Champion 1970-1973. Joe Frazier was a great Heavyweight champion who put up the toughest resistance Muhammad Ali ever faced. As one half of the 1971 "Fight of the Century," he was the first man to defeat Ali, and only Ali and George Foreman ever beat him. According to Muhammad Ali, "That fight was as close to dying as I've ever come." As well, Muhammad Ali said, "I hit him with body shots that would have brought down cities." It's not every day you get an invitation to meet the mayor of New York, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, in Gracie Mansion. Although this mayor doesn't live in the mansion like his predecessor, he likes to keep it in pristine, museum-like condition. He actually lives on 79th and 5th avenue - about a mile from our practice! Photo taken on April 4th, 2005 from inside Gracie Mansion. | |

Originally signing a letter of intent to play for the
University of Florida, Kwame Brown later declared for the 2001 NBA Draft.
The Washington Wizards decided to use their first overall pick on
him, becoming the first team to ever select a high-school prospect
with the first overall pick. Thus, the first high school player
ever selected with the first overall pick in the NBA Draft!
Additionally, the expectations upon Brown were increased by the
fact that Michael Jordan, acclaimed as the greatest basketball
player ever, had chosen him. Currently plays for the Los Angeles Lakers
(Forward/Center)

Jim Plunkett played collegiately for
Stanford University, where he won the Heisman
Trophy in 1970, and professionally for three National Football League teams: the New England Patriots, San Francisco 49ers and Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders.
In 1971, he was the first player taken in the NFL
draft. 1971 AFL Rookie of the Year. Superbowl XV MVP and
1980 Comeback Player of the Year. Played on the 1983
Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders Super Bowl Championship team.
Played for the New England Patriots-1971-1975, San
Francisco 49ers-1976-1977, Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders
1979-1986.
"He has to be one of the great comeback stories
of our time," said Raiders owner Al Davis. "It surprised me
that he was able to come back because I thought physically
he had been so punished that he couldn't come back - and he
certainly did," says Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi about
Jim Plunkett on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. Back and
forth he swung, the pendulum passer. Rarely did an athlete
reach the highs and lows, and highs again, of Jim Plunkett.

dominated his position more than any player in NFL History.
He is generally regarded the greatest receiver in NFL
history. Rice was selected to the
Pro
Bowl 13 times (1986-1996, 1998, 2002) in his 20 NFL seasons. He was
named Offensive Player of the Year in 1987 and 1993.

Tiger Woods to golf, and
Michael
Jordan to basketball, Jerry Rice was
to the WR position (come on, how do you expect me to
come up with the most dominant player in football regardless of position?) Rice

Former basketball player, John Starks, gained
fame while playing at shooting guard for the New York
Knicks of the National Basketball Association in the
1990s. Starks was at the center of one of the most
famous plays in Knicks history during the 1993
playoffs series against the Chicago Bulls. Starks was
trapped by the Bulls' defense, but split the defenders
on a pick-and-roll play with center Patrick Ewing and
dunked over Michael Jordan and Horace Grant. In 1997,
he received the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award in
recognition of his accomplishments. Starks was
well-known for his fiery intensity and emotional
displays while out on the court. His frequent
outbursts of anger sometimes got the best of him.
Fearless and bold, this streaky outside shooter can
match anyone trey-for-trey and dunk-for-dunk. He is
the Knicks' all-time leader in career three-point
field goals.

I recently met Paul Sorvino at a wedding and during our talk,
we found out that we have a lot in common. Some of his
roles have
required him to order a hit, while when I work, I tell people to
gargle and spit. In his job, his role might require him to knock out
a few teeth, while my job... well, you get the idea.

While hosting a Greek Independence Day reception, Mayor Bloomberg
stopped by to catch up on the last year and to ask my opinion on whether
he should make a presidental run. I reminded him that if he became
president, we wouldn't have our yearly get-togethers. Well, to keep a
long story short, it looks like Mr. Bloomberg will be our mayor for
some time to come.

dropped by for a visit. This time, he and I discuss the economic

General Assembly.
