Dr. Jack McGourty is an Associate Dean at the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, Columbia University. As Associate Dean, Jack is responsible for the academics, research, and advising for the first and second year students. He is the lead instructor for the Gateway Lab design course required for all first year engineering and applied science students. He advises students in their academic goals, major and minor selection, and various research and internship opportunities. Additionally, Jack is responsible for all assessment, evaluation, and accreditation activities for the School.

His research interests focus on technological innovation processes, technology-enabled behavioral health service-delivery, and the integration of information technology and outcome assessment methods for student learning. Jack has been awarded several million dollars in research funds from government sources over the past five years, including major grants from National Science Foundation for k-12 and engineering education activities. Additionally, Jack serves as Director of Assessment for the Gateway Engineering Education Coalition, a National Science Foundation funded initiative. Jack teaches courses in both Columbia’s School of Engineering and Applied Science and Barnard College’s Psychology Department.

Jack received a Ph.D. in Applied Psychology from Stevens Institute of Technology and completed his post-doctoral training in Clinical Psychology at Teachers College, Columbia University. Jack is an active member in the American Psychological Association, American Psychological Society, the American Society for Engineering Education, and the Product Development and Management Association. He serves as an associate editor for the Journal of Engineering Education and as a reviewer for several other peer-reviewed journals. Jack also serves as editor for the Stevens Alliance for Technology Management Newsletter, a publication by the consortia of academic and industrial partners hosted by Stevens Institute of Technology. He has published several articles and book chapters on assessment, technological innovation, and educational related topics and is co-author of the Team Developer, a computerized multi-source assessment and skill building system published by John Wiley & Sons.

Jack had a long and successful career in industry prior to entering academia. In his last position, he served as President and Chief Operating Officer for a national retail organization, with profit and loss responsibility for over 200 locations. Additionally, Jack served as Executive Vice President of Operations for S&L Acquisition Company, a large, multi-division retail and service organization. Over the past several years, Jack has served on the board of directors for several academic, industrial, and volunteer organizations. He currently serves on the executive board of Aequus Technologies, a for-profit corporation, which develops and markets technology-based products, services and educational programs for individuals with disabilities.
