Por vs. Para

It is generally very difficult to pinpoint the meaning of prepositions, short of giving long lists of usage. However, if the doubt is only on whether to use para or por, a good rule is that para conveys the 'goal' oriented facet of expression, other facets being expressed by por.

Proper de-emphasis of purpose or goal in a 'reason-why' context.

In this situation, the use of para or por depends on the meaning that wants to be conveyed. The prepositions are sometimes interchangeable because of conceptual overlap. This is so because 'reason' includes conceptually both, the 'purpose' and the 'motive', which are difficult to separate from each other. When the second is important, por is used.

Grammatical notes for the drills in this page.

It is generally very difficult to pinpoint the meaning of prepositions, short of giving long lists of usage. However, if the doubt is only on whether to use para or por, a good rule is that para conveys the 'goal' oriented facet of expression, other facets being expressed by por.

    The items covered are:

    1) The emphasis of purpose or goal in a 'movement' context.

Para conveys a sense of 'goal' or 'purpose' in a movement.

    Examples: Quest. 9 Quest. 17 Quest. 18

    2) The de-emphasis of purpose or goal in a 'movement' context.

When goal is less important in the movement, por is used, often with the meaning of 'along'.

    Examples: Quest. 9 Quest. 17 Quest. 18

    3) The emphasis of purpose or goal in a 'time' context.

Goal in a 'time' context is a limit, a deadline, a time by which something is due to happen. To express it, para is used, with the meaning of 'until', 'by'.

    Examples: Quest. 1 Quest. 18

    4) The de-emphasis of purpose or goal in a 'time' context.

When goal is less important in the time context, por is used. It has the meaning of duration, similar to 'for'. When refering to a point in time, it has the meaning of 'around'.

    Examples: Quest. 1 Quest. 18

    5) The emphasis of purpose or goal in a 'judgement' context.

'Goal' in this context means: standard of judgement, expectations which arise from the situation and may or may not take place. Para is used with a meaning similar to 'for', 'in view of'.

    Examples: Quest. 11

    6) The de-emphasis of purpose or goal in a 'judgement' context.

Por is used, meaning 'because of', 'on account of'.

    Examples: Quest. 11

    7) The emphasis of purpose or goal in a 'reason-why' context.

In this situation, the use of para or por depends on the meaning that wants to be conveyed. The prepositions are sometimes interchangeable because of conceptual overlap. This is so because 'reason' includes conceptually both, the 'purpose' and the 'motive', which are difficult to separate from each other. When the first is important, para is used.

    Examples: Quest. 2 Quest. 3 Quest. 4 Quest. 5 Quest. 6 Quest. 7 Quest. 8 Quest. 10 Quest. 11 Quest. 12 Quest. 13 Quest. 14 Quest. 15 Quest. 16 Quest. 17

    8) The de-emphasis of purpose or goal in a 'reason-why' context.

    Examples: Quest. 2 Quest. 3 Quest. 4 Quest. 5 Quest. 6 Quest. 7 Quest. 8 Quest. 10 Quest. 11 Quest. 12 Quest. 13 Quest. 14 Quest. 15 Quest. 16 Quest. 17
