Home: Overview

Dr. Kartik Chandran is an environmental engineer at Columbia University, where he is a Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Engineering. He primarily works on the interface between environmental molecular and microbiology, environmental biotechnology and environmental engineering. Applications of his work have ranged from energy and resource efficient treatment of nitrogen containing wastewater streams, development and implementation of sustainable approaches to sanitation to novel models for resource recovery. Under his stewardship, the directions of biological wastewater treatment and biological nutrient removal were established for the first ever time in the history of Columbia University. In 2015, he received the MacArthur Fellowship for his innovative work on "integrating microbial ecology, molecular biology, and engineering to transform wastewater from a troublesome pollutant to a valuable resource".

2ND INTERNATIONAL RESOURCE RECOVERY CONFERENCE

The 2nd International Resource Recovery Conference will host researchers, highly qualified industry representatives and financial specialists involved in resource recovery from “waste” streams. The overarching goal of the conference is to present an updated outlook of resource, and energy recovery from such “waste” streams and to design better “pipelines” for the manufacture and use of recovered products. Technical, financial and social perspectives will be included in the conference program to foster an integrated discussion that enables better linkages between resource and product recovery as well as market drivers and demands.

PROF. CHANDRAN WINS THE MACARTHUR GRANT

Prof. Kartik Chandran has been named a 2015 MacArthur Fellow for his work in “transforming wastewater from a pollutant requiring disposal to a resource for useful products, such as commodity chemicals, energy sources, and fertilizers.”  The “genius grant” comes with a $625,000 stipend that is given with no conditions—fellows may use the money as they see fit.

PROF. CHANDRAN WINS 2016 WEF AWARD

The Water Environment Federation (WEF; Alexandria, Va.) has announced the recipients of the 2016 WEF Awards. The annual awards recognize individuals and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to the water environment profession, WEF, and WEF Member Associations.

Recipients contribute to the sustainability of water resources and make a profound impact on the future through education and engagement with water professionals.
