The Sri Lanka Meteorology and Oceanography Network was started by Lareef Zubair after informal discussions with Mr. K.R. Abhayasinghe of the Department of Meteorology, Dr. Kanthi Yapa of the University of Ruhuna and Dr. W.L. Sumathipala at the Open University of Sri Lanka during the annual meeting of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science in December 1998 in Sri Jayawardhenpura. The aim of this network to keep one another informed of developments related to meteorology and oceanography. The network has 100 subscribers at present. Newsletters are distributed by post and email to Sri Lankan research libraries, to agencies involved with meteorology and oceanography and to researchers abroad. From 2000, the coverage of the newsletter was expanded to cover hydrology as well.
