Epidemic and Endemicity
More than 80% of the total cases of malaria in Peru in 1998 were from the Iquitos region.
The focus of the epidemic was concentrated along the Iquitos-Nauta road.
(See WHO data)

Local health authorities have declared malaria to be endemic in the region since 1999, when the epidemic was controlled. However, the social and landscape dynamics underlying the malaria epidemic and its transition to endemism are not well understood.
