With her sixth independent release (May 1994), 23year-old Ani DiFranco
has quickly climbed the CMJ charts (hitting #47 on the top 150) while
simultaneously breaking into the AAA radio format. It is the most
anxiously awaited album from the thinking person's alternative/acoustic
punk feminist. Unabashed rage and humor drive poetic/hyper-kinetic
lyrics through acoustic guitar heaven providing the tension which
ties the album together even in it's most serene moments.
Somewhere between disconcerting sincerity and smartass sarcasm Ani is
hammering out a space for the roots music of the 90's. In keeping
with Ani's five previous albums, there is no wall of sound here. This
is a sonically spare album with an incredible lyrical richness and
emotional impact.
