the righteous reader
your big electronic guide to the little plastic world of ani difranco
brought to you by the mermaids and mermen of righteous babe records
the pre-thanksgiving no-frills issue: november 25, 1997

We're all too busy crankin' out stuff for the new album (see below) to devote
the usual attention to this Reader of Righteousness, so this time it's just
the facts, ma'am...

THE NEW ALBUM
is officially called LITTLE PLASTIC CASTLE, and is officially scheduled for
release on FEBRUARY 17, 1998. 12 songs, among them "As Is," "Fuel," and
"Independence Day," of them familiar to folks who've seen the recent
concerts, but not in the form they appear here. There's a new version of
"Gravel," for instance, a 14-minute jam accompanying the poem "Pulse," and
two horn-driven tracks, "Deep Dish" and the title song. The backing
musicians: Andy Stochansky and Jason Mercer, natch, plus the return of Sara
Lee, and guest appearances by folks like Jerry Moratta and Jon Hassell.

THE RECENT PRESS
includes the interview and full-page photo in ROLLING STONE's November 13
"Women of Rock" 30th Anniversary issue, as well as ecstatic concert reviews
in THE LA TIMES ("she makes each time on stage a night of exploration and
search" and THE SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE ("DiFranco achieves a fine, tricky
balance between gut-grabbing tunes and tension-reducing fun"). Then there's
the brand-new cover story in the December 9 issue of THE ADVOCATE. (Check out
their website at <www.advocate.com> for further info.) The upcoming album is
featured among "The 25 Most Anticipated Albums of 1998" in the January '98
ALTERNATIVE PRESS, while the last one, "Living in Clip," is hailed as one of
the "Essential CDs by 30 Hot Artists" in ACOUSTIC GUITAR's December issue.
"Clip" and "Dilate" are also singled out in Greil Marcus's "Real Life Top 10"
in the October '97 ARTFORUM, of all places.

NOW SHE BELONGS TO HISTORY
The Little Folksinger is prominently featured in a buncha big new multi-pound
reference books, including Rolling Stone's Women in Rock, the All Music
Guide, and the Music Hound Guide to Rock.

THE TV SHOW ALL AMERICA IS WAITING FOR
Ani appears on the fab PBS music series "Sessions at West 54th" the week of
January 3, sharing the hour (but not the stage, alas) with one-name wonder
Tricky. Check your local listings for exact air date and time. For more on
the show, visit its website: <www.sessionsatwest54th.com>.

THE RADIO REPORT
As of Nov. 17, Clip has spent a whoppin' 29 weeks on CMJ's Top 200. I'm no
math major, but that looks like half a year to me. And it's still goin'...

Okay, now it's back to the grindstone for your humble Minister of
Communication. Gotta get crackin' on the hypefest sure to accompany CASTLE on
its journey into the world.
