Purposes for Educational Assessment

In Chapter 1 we learned that any work with assessments should begin with a clear awareness of the construct, the population and the assessment purposes. Pinpointing the assessment purpose(s), the major focus of Chapter 2, is important for the designer as well as the user of assessments. To ensure that an instrument will indeed be able to serve its intended purposes, it helps to start with a clear articulation of purposes, and then to let the purposes guide us during the assessment design, selection, and validation processes.
