Chapter 4 Objectives

On completing this chapter and the structured exercises in the module, you should be able to:

  • Classify different types of assessment devices used in education. For example,
    • assessments of cognitive, affective, personal-social constructs;
    • standardized and unstandardized assessments;
    • norm-referenced and criterion-referenced tools;
    • speed and power tests;
    • and different types of paper and pencil and performance assessments.
  • Differentiate among six assessment methods based on the response modes of individuals assessed.
  • Compare the advantages and disadvantages of each of the five assessment methods in measuring cognitive, affective, social and behavioral constructs in particular educational contexts.
  • Evaluate how the choice of a particular assessment method during the assessment design process affects the validity, reliability, and/or utility of the resulting assessment tool and its results.
