Objectives
On completing this chapter

types of assessment devices used in education. For example,
- assessments of
cognitive, affective, personal-social constructs;
- standardized and
unstandardized assessments;
- norm-referenced
and criterion-referenced tools;
- speed and power
tests;
- and different types
of paper and pencil and performance assessments.
- Differentiate among
six assessment methods based on the response modes of individuals assessed.
- Compare the advantages
and disadvantages of each of the five assessment methods in measuring cognitive,
affective, social and behavioral constructs in particular educational contexts.
- Evaluate how the choice
of a particular assessment method during the assessment design process affects
the validity, reliability, and/or utility of the resulting assessment tool
and its results.
