Chapter 8 Objectives

After studying this chapter and completing the structured exercises in the module, you should be able to do the following.

  • Apply the Process Model to design or select sound performance assessment tools in User Path 1 (classroom assessment purposes).
  • Select performance assessment methods that are best suited for measuring particular learning outcomes. (Use validity, reliability and utility criteria to guide choice of assessment methods).
  • Develop assessment specifications (FORM II) to guide the development or selection of performance assessment tools.
  • Construct different types of performance assessment tools to meet specifications and accepted guidelines (OR Select assessments to meet specifications).

    • Product-based assessments
    • Interview-based assessments, and
    • Portfolio-based assessments.
  • Distinguish between different types of scoring rubrics, identifying their advantages and disadvantages in particular circumstances.
  • Apply recommended procedures to design valid and reliable scoring rubrics.
  • When using performance assessment tools, identify the major sources of rater/observer error and strategies for controlling them.
  • Conduct a content validation of a performance assessment tool.
