Assessment Purpose: Self-assessment screening tool to determine whether one's intimate relationship is unhealthy and aid in deciding whether or not to seek further guidance or counseling about one's relationship status. This screening tool can also be completed in the presence of a counselor as an intake form for discussion and referral for help.
Population: Female and male college students in an intimate relationship.
Construct: Subjective perception of an unhealthy relationship.
Assessment Method: Individual Assessment Written Structured-Response (W-SR)
Domain Specification for Unhealthy Relationships:
1. General Indicator: Experience-based reports of partner's behaviors in the relationship
1.1 Specific Indicators
1.1.1 Emotional Abuse
1.1.1.1 Partner uses coercion to get desired reaction from subject
1.1.1.1.1 Displays extreme mood swings (highs and lows)
1.1.1.1.2 Sulks or pouts
1.1.1.1.3 Give subject the "silent treatment" or ignores partner
1.1.1.1.4 Makes unrealistic promises to subject
1.1.1.2 Isolates partner from family and/or friends
1.1.1.2.1 Restricts subject's use of phone
1.1.1.2.2 Tracks subject's whereabouts
1.1.1.3 Irrational reactions to subject's behavior
1.1.1.3.1 Expects subject to anticipate his/her needs and wants
1.1.1.3.2 Blames subject for things that go wrong, even when it is clear that the subject is not responsible.
1.1.1.4 Partner demonstrates jealous/possessive behaviors
1.1.1.4.1 Sabotages subject's attempts to go to school or work
1.1.1.4.2 Listens in on subject's phone calls
1.1.1.4.3 Reads subject's personal mail and/or e-mail
1.1.2 Verbal Abuse
1.1.2.1 Embarrasses subject in public
1.1.2.1.1 Spreads rumors about subject
1.1.2.1.2 Discloses personal details about subject
1.1.2.1.3 Yells or swears at subject
1.1.2.2 Threatens partner
