NY/NJ CAN Bulletin 2.2.03 1. FEB 15, DAYTIME MARCH PLANS Hunter voted at its last meeting to host the CAN feeder march to the UFPJ main march on Feb 15, and now CAN is trying to get other student/youth groups to march with us. Youth Bloc seems to have decided to march with us, and people from CAN (and Hunter specifically) were going to the Uptown Youth for Peace and Justice meeting on Tuesday to formally propose to them that they march with us in a united, student march. We also decided that the march should be advertised as leaving around 10:30 for now, pending official announcements about when/where the UFPJ march will start (the cops are denying them a permit so far). *We voted unanimously* by a proposal from Monique to have a sign-making party. We tried to decide where to have it, but we got bogged down and we voted on whether to table the discussion or to scrap the idea of the party all together. *We voted 7 to 3 in favor of tabling* *We also decided unanimously* that CAN's themes for the march should be along the lines of: Campuses Say NO to War!, Money for Schools Not War, Budget Cuts = Weapons of Mass Destruction. Binh volunteered to figure out the march logistics (route, organizing a team of march captains); Laura volunteered to make a flyer advertising the feeder march and sign-up sheets for non-CAN students we meet on the 15; Jessie volunteered to write an email announcement of the feeder march. 2. FEB 15, NIGHT RALLY Dan(?) wrote a letter outlining our plan for the rally to be circulated EVERYWHERE possible. Binh suggested that we put the (awesome!) flyer for the evening event on the internet and include a link to it in our announcement/letter that we send so other campus groups can download it, print it, and use it at their campuses. Minou volunteered to put it on the CAN(NY/NJ) site. Speakers: *We voted unanimously to have 2 student speakers* *We voted unanimously that one should be from CAN, and one should from Youth Bloc* *We voted unanimously that Minou should be CAN's speaker* MCs: *We voted unanimously to have 3 MCs with the idea that more can be added by the MCs or the Feb 15 Program Committee as needed* *We voted unanimously that Columbia should provide 2 of the MCs* It was decided that other campuses should ask people if they would like to MC so that CAN has a diverse representation from its member schools. 3. NATIONAL CONFERENCE IN CHICAGO, FEB 22-23 *We voted unanimously to get buses for the NY/NJ area delegations*; Laura volunteered to call Greyhound to check out rates Monique argued that we should put mobilizing schools for the national conference at the center of CAN's outreach; Monique and Nick volunteered to follow up with this. 4. NEXT MEETING We decided to move our meetings back to 2pm next Sunday to make it easier for people to get to. -Minutes taken by Binh from Hunter. NYC Campus Anti-war Network Meeting, 12/8/02 1. Introductions: 9 campuses were represented at the meeting: Columbia University, Fordham University, NYU, City College of NY, Rutgers College, Hunter College, Stony Brook, New School, Boston University. 2. Reports on activities since the last meeting: Since the last meeting, many CAN groups have held inspiring events at their campuses. New School held a public forum with their president Bob Kerry to ask him to either step down from an ultra conservative group advocating for the “freedom” of Iraq or from the presidency of New School University. The SUNY Stony Brook Coalition has been doing research on Stony Brook’s involvement with the military and is planning to have “weapons inspections” their own campus. Fordham has been flyering and having potlucks in the Bronx, and Columbia held a debate about the war. 3. Plans for December 10th, International Human Rights Day: Please see Dec. 10th Press Release 4. Mission Statement: After much debate, CAN voted 14 to 4 in favor of adopting the following mission statement: “We are a network of campus-based groups in the New York/New Jersey area that are united in opposition to the war on Iraq and the infringements on civil liberties in the form of US racist practices. We feel that the Bush administration's foreign aggression is unjustified, racist, and morally wrong. The purpose of this network is to facilitate communication between individual campus movements, to coordinate actions, and to provide a forum for information and resources.” 5. Future Actions: CAN decided to run its own busses down to D.C. for the march on Jan. 18th. It will be running one bus from Columbia University nd one from Washington Square Park. The possibility of holding a large rally in the beginning of February was also briefly discussed. 6. Working Groups: The meeting then divided into three working groups for networking, writing the press release, and arranging busses. These groups are set to meet again next Sunday. NYC Campus Anti-War Network Meeting, 11/24/02 1. Introductions: 11 campuses were represented at the meeting: Columbia University, Fordham University, NY University, City College of NY, Rutgers College, Hunter College, Stony Brook, New School, Bard University, Humanities High School, and Princeton University. 2. Purpose and name: After a lot of discussion, everyone agreed that we should be more than simply a communication network with a listserve and a website, but that we should also be a network for action - calling demonstrations, simultaneous actions on our campuses, and perhaps in the future, walkouts and student-strikes. People also agreed that we wanted to be a network of campus-based groups that are against the war on Iraq, open to anyone and everyone who is also against the war, including faculty, and staff. Our name, decided *unanimously*, is the Campus Anti War Network (N.Y./N.J). We decided that a working group should come up with a statement representing the group's name and purpose. 3. Actions: We decided *unanimously* that we would organize events the week of December 10th (International Human Rights Day), and to hold referendums on the war and try to get people to the protest on December 14th in Harlem if possible. We also decided to meet again on December 8th. Columbia University volunteered to host again. One of the chairs volunteered to send out the email list to everyone which will function as a listserv until Minou from Columbia sets one up (along with a website). -Minutes taken by Pham Binh
