Country Map

Grettis saga, Gísla saga Súrssonar, and Hardar Saga og Hölmverja.

Presented as part of the interdisciplinary project:

Space and Place in the Icelandic Outlaw Sagas:

Mapping Place Name in Grettis saga, Gísla saga Súrssonar, and Hardar Saga og Hölmverja.

by Mary Catherine Kinniburgh, MA

This map represents all the proper name mentions of countries within the medieval Icelandic outlaw sagas, including Grettir's Saga, Gisli's Saga, and The Saga of Hord and the People of Holm. Country name data was extracted from a TEI-encoded corpus of the sagas, and the metadata was linked with the GIS map and prepared for web display using the JavaScript library Leaflet.

This map was produced with funding from the Digital Centers Internship Program at the Digital Social Sciences Center by Columbia Libraries. To read a step-by-step exploration of the process of making this map, please see the blog entry "Medieval Icelandic Place Name Map: GIS in Action" at the Digital Centers Internship Blog.
