Space and Place in the Icelandic Outlaw Sagas:

Mapping Place Name in Grettis saga, Gísla saga Súrssonar, and Hardar Saga og Hölmverja.

by Mary Catherine Kinniburgh, MA

This map represents all the proper name mentions of countries within the medieval Icelandic outlaw sagas, including Grettir's Saga, Gisli's Saga, and The Saga of Hord and the People of Holm. Metadata on place name--including categories for type of usage (declarative, possessive, or to show affiliation of a person with a place) and presence in prose, poetry, or an embedded speech--was extracted from a TEI-encoded corpus of the sagas, and the metadata was arranged according to place name weight (frequency of mentions across sagas) using a force algorithm in the open-source software Gephi. The Gephi visualization has been prepared for web display using the JavaScript library Sigma.

This map was produced with funding from the Digital Centers Internship Program at the Digital Social Sciences Center by Columbia Libraries.
