Place Name Map

Grettis saga, Gísla saga Súrssonar, and Hardar Saga og Hölmverja.

Presented as part of the interdisciplinary project:

Space and Place in the Icelandic Outlaw Sagas:

Mapping Place Name in Grettis saga, Gísla saga Súrssonar, and Hardar Saga og Hölmverja.

by Mary Catherine Kinniburgh, MA

This map contains geographic points and their corresponding metadata for over 80% of the unique mentions of place names in the medieval Icelandic outlaw sagas, including Grettir's Saga, Gisli's Saga, and The Saga of Hord and the People of Holm.

Place names are categorized by geographic or social feature when it is mentioned nearby in the text, and color-coded for quick reading of which place names appear across multiple sagas. In order to see the place name and its number of mentions in each respective saga, please click on the desired point.

Using data mined from a TEI-encoded corpus of sagas, this map was produced with funding from the Digital Centers Internship Program at the Digital Social Sciences Center by Columbia Libraries.

To read a step-by-step exploration of the process of making this map, please see the blog entry "Medieval Icelandic Place Name Map: GIS in Action" at the Digital Centers Internship Blog.
