#1.	Henretta JP et al (including David S. Sumner). Feasibility of endovascular
repair of AAA with local anesthesia with intravenous sedation. For a direct link
    to this paper, click here.

Comment by mdt: As noted in the results section of the paper, the operative mortality was
zero; and only one of 47 patients needed to be converted to general anesthesia to facilitate
repair of an external iliac artery retroperitoneally. Congratulations to David Sumner's group
    at Springfield, IL.

#2.	JM Jean-Claude, LM Reilly, RJ Stoney, LM Messina. Pararenal aortic aneurysms: The
future of open aortic aneurysm repair. For a direct link to this paper, click here.

Comment by mdt: As the authors conclude, "These data provide a benchmark for expected
treatment outcomes in patients with these patterns of pararenal aortic aneurysmal disease
that currently can only be managed with open repair." My former student, Jessie Jean-Claude,
has reported on an experience spanning two decades by the U Cal San Francisco vascular
group, once headed by a pioneer in American vascular surgery, Jack Wylie. Jessie has
finished her training now at UCSF and has joined the faculty of Univ Wisc, with Jon Towne.
    Good luck, Jessie.

#3. M Miralles et al (including Rob Thompson and Jeff Reilly). Indomethacin inhibits
expansion of experimental aortic aneurysms via inhibition of the cox2 isoform of cyclooxygenase. For a direct link to this paper, click here.

Comment by mdt: *Another* former student, Jeff Reilly, doing first class research on the
possibilities of preventing AAA pharmaceutically. Jeff was in my lab with Colleen Brophy,
when we found that the "killer" elastase of AAA was very likely to be MMP-9. It took me
several more years for my following students to prove it.
