Supporting Machines
In order to support all these machines, plus a collection of
workstations and other machines spread across campus, we had to come
up with a way to run backups on all of them with little human
intervention.
Howie and
Melissa
wrote a package called DeeJay: the Dump Jockey and Daemon of the
Jukebox. DeeJay uses a tape jukebox like the one pictured above.
We wrote a
paper about DeeJay
for the October 1992
LISA VI conference in Long Beach, CA
(co-sponsored by USENIX and
SAGE).
AcIS provides a
tutorial which describes our setup and teaches a little bit about
Unix, email, and other things available on our machines.
We also provide support on a
consulting basis for other Unix hosts on campus. This includes
the option for network backups done with DeeJay.
