Purpose: the purpose of this program is to review the principles of patient / family education ,and to demonstrate how to access the patient and family educational resources that are available on the NYPH Infonet.

• assess the learning needs of your patients during their pre-hospital, hospital, and post hospital phase of their illness.
  
• access and review the resources available at NYPH for patient education.
  
• develop teaching strategies consistent with the patient's learning needs assessment.
  
• use the patient education resources available when implementing teaching strategies.
  
• evaluate the effectiveness of the teaching strategies implemented by assessing patient learning outcomes.
  
• document the teaching strategies implemented and the patient's response.
