Barriers to
learning are identified through interview and observation. The
assessment includes language, emotional, physical, cognitive or
sensory considerations, motivation, and readiness to learn. Patients
are also assessed for the presence of any religious or cultural
beliefs, attitudes, or health practices that need to be considered.
Barriers to learning are documented on the Interdisciplinary Patient
and Family Education Record with each teaching session.
The patient may learn best by reading, discussion, audiovisuals,
demonstrations, in groups, or individually. The patient's preferred
learning style and the type of resources available are both considered
when choosing a teaching method.
