Nursing staff are the primary
providers of medication education to patients including information
about drug-drug and drug-food interactions. Physicians, pharmacists,
dietitians and other health care providers also participate
in this process.
The teaching occurs during the course of a patient's hospitalization
or during ambulatory visits. Approved resources are used to
aid the teaching process. The resources may be electronic or
paper monographs.
A process for preventing drug-nutrient
interactions with specific high-risk categories of medications
is in place at each Center.
For example: The dietitian will instruct the patient on any
specific diet that should be implemented for a drug therapy,
for example MAO inhibitors - for which patients should be prescribed
a tyramine restricted diet.
Policies concerning medication counseling can be found in the
Nutrition Manual, Pharmacy Manual and the Patient and Family
Education Handbook
