Assess for Cognitive Barriers to Learning

Assess the patient's ability to learn, understand and retain information.

Cognitive ability may be compromised by a physical disorder or developmental disability.

A person's cognitive ability may also be temporarily impaired by extreme stress.

The patient's age and developmental level will affect the choice of methods for teaching and learning.

Patients with learning disabilities or low level reading skills may require a different approach to teaching.

You may not be aware of a patient's cognitive ability or reading ability until you begin to teach and evaluate learning.

Evaluate learning outcomes frequently.
