Feelings of fear, denial,
anxiety, guilt and anger are reactions that can provide obstacles to
learning.
Mild anxiety may actually sharpen a
person's attention, but more intense emotional responses can be overwhelming
and impede learning.
Try to determine the source of the emotional
response and identify the patient's coping mechanisms.
Assess non-verbal cues such as behavior,
facial expressions and gestures.
Enlist the family's assistance and
provide teaching to the family member the patient designates.
