Literacy Barriers

It is estimated that over 40 million Americans are functionally illiterate. Yet these same persons may be asked to read and interpret complex consent forms and health education information, including navigation of the health care system. Some patients may not tell you they are unable to read, but instead struggle with written information provided, or simply ignore it.

  • If a written resource is given to a patient, evaluate the person's understanding of the material by casually questioning about the content.
  • If a patient is unable to answer, go over the material verbally and obtain feedback after discussion.
  • Utilize audio and video tapes when available, demonstrate techniques as needed and use written resources with pictorials.
  • Involve family members and friends, with the permission of the patient
