Research

I am currently a postdoctoral research scientist at the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology of Columbia University. My research interests are in behavioral ecology and the evolution of sexually selected traits within the Pipridae – Neotropical lekking birds known as the manakins. My doctorate research, completed at the University of Kansas, focused on the evolution of visual signals and ecological niches among manakins of the tribe Ilicurinii, distributed in Central America, Ecuador, Amazon and Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Currently, I am interested in testing predictions of lek evolution based on the interaction between spatial distribution and phenology of fruit plants, lek placement and foraging behavior. At a larger geographical scale, I am also interested in addressing trait and taxic microevolution under strong sexual selection scenarios, by testing for variation in courtship behavior among populations of manakin species, in association with molecular phylogeography hypothesis and ecological niche modeling for manakins from the Brazilian Amazon. I am currently studying the effects of landscape fragmentation on seed dispersal for a bird-dispersed understory herb, Heliconia acuminata.
