The information on the following pages of my project "Northern Manhattan" comes from a variety of sources, including my own observations. In instances where the source is on-line, I provide a link to its site. Some facts I learned from an insitution's curator, some were gleaned from flyers, and yet others came from these publications on my shelves:

Chernow, Barbara A. and Vallasi, George A., Eds. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Fifth Ed. New York, NY: Columbia University Press, 1993.

Dunlap, David W. On Broadway: A Journey Uptown Over Time. New York, NY: Rizzoli, 1990.

Jackson, Kenneth T., Ed. The Encyclopedia of New York City. New Haven, CT, and London: Yale University Press; New York, NY: The New-York Historical Society, 1995.

Michelin's Tourist Guide New York City

Willensky, Elliot and White, Norval. AIA Guide to New York City, Third Ed. New York, NY: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1988.

Photo credits are given immediately above the photographs.

Please note that the links from my site to those of others are provided for convenience only and do not constitute an endorsement. The sites of others are not under my control and may change at any time.

About this site:

When in 1998 my husband and I moved into the Upper Manhattan neighborhood, I knew next to nothing about the area.  In order to address this regrettable shortcoming, I began to read up on the neighborhood in ever-widening circles and became captivated by the richness of its history.  As my notes and on-line resources accumulated it occurred to me that others may also be interested, and the idea of sharing information on a web site was born.  It is also an effort to counter the fact that too many Manhattan maps show only the part of the island south of 110th Street.  I hope you will enjoy this site and find the links useful.  Your feedback is welcome.

Thank you!
