working title: Building Stash: Developing an Administrative Guide for the Accidental Craft Business Owner

current abstract:

Running a business takes time away from doing business, a challenge acutely felt by small and solo businesses. With lower technology costs, availability of Internet access, proliferation of online shopping, and many new Internet applications launching each day, the financial barrier to profitable business ownership has been reduced Many are finding that it is possible to turn a hobby into a business.

However, while these barriers are lowered there is still much to be done by the small business owner. These new entrepreneurs are discovering there is a vast amount of information they need to organize, process, and understand to become and stay competitive. The amount of information a person needs to parse each day has exploded in the past decade and can very easily overwhelm the new business owner who is used to someone else calling the shots as Boss. Stash aims to help educate, inform, and calm the artists-entrepreneurs and allow for them to spend more time doing what they love and less time on the administrative part of their business.

Stash is a guide providing education, information, and organization, for key information areas of today's small business. This guide will assist the business owner in administrating these blocks of new technology, intellectual property, disaster planning, archiving, preservation and building a successful enterprise.

A draft annotated bibliography is available here.
