Imagine exploring Berlin from the vantage point of a Columbia German-language classroom! You'll confront the question of what has made Berlin a magnet for people from all walks of life, familiarize yourself with Berlin's response to the current refugee crisis, get to know Berlins multi-cultural "Kieze", choose your own favored district, and gain insights into how Berlin's history today shapes what's going on in Berlin today. What better way to prepare yourself for a visit to the capital city of Germany, for an internship at one if its institutions, or for study at Berlin's Freie Universität or Humboldt Universität?

Advanced German I provides the chance to experience Berlin within a media-supported, communicative-language environment and is a gateway to majoring or concentrating in German at Columbia. The course provides ample opportunities for interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational communication in German.

Goals for language development:
1) Increase ease in reading not only of various genre thematically related to historical and topical events in Berlin,
2) Develop interpretive skills needed for communicating questions, ideas, and opinions,
3) Build vocabulary and ability to define German words using German,
4) Interact comfortably with authentic genre and forms of German media, and
5) Communicate your new skills, mini presentations, facilitator roles, writing activities, and a proposals for projects you might actually want to carry out in Berlin in the future.
Viewings, readings, individual and collaborative assignments, and interactive class activities aim to strengthen both oral and written communication and the ability to engage in critical analysis in German.

Expectations

German 3001 is an ambitious 14-week socio-cultural exploration of Berlin that includes

1) Communicating ONLY in German in a cooperative environment, i.e., working with partners and in teams,
2) Negotiating Berlin's transportation system,
3) Engaging with cultural diversity in Berlin's multi-cultural neighborhoods,
4) Questioning and reflecting upon Berlin's recent past, and
5) Each student will create and present a semester project that might serve as his/her application for an internship or semester of study in Berlin.

Das Semester Projekt

  • Throughout this semester-long course the primary goal will be the development of a semester project that represents 25% of the course grade and must include
  • Proposal outlining plans a semester of study/internship in Berlin [10% of 25%] containing 1) statement of purpose, 2) rationale, 3) evidence of familiarity with topic, 4) clearly outlined attainable goals, and 5) timeline for completion of project. 
  • Power-Point (or alternative media mode) presentation of project (15% of 20%)

Participation

  • Regular attendance, daily preparation and active participation are expected and represent 20% of each student's overall course grade.
