The Office of Richard C. Carrier

Welcome. My name is Richard Carrier and I am the author of Sense and Goodness without God: A Defense of Metaphysical Naturalism and contributing author of The Empty Tomb: Jesus Beyond the Grave. This page tells you more about me and my qualifications.

I am first and foremost a historian and a philosopher. I have also taught classes and frequently speak and debate before audiences around the country. I'm a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard, I have a B.A. from UC Berkeley in History and Classical Civilizations, and an M.A. and M.Phil. in ancient history from Columbia University. My specialties are science, philosophy, historical method, and Greco-Roman religious and intellectual history. I can also translate Latin, Greek, German, and French. I have over six years experience as a teacher, translator, website editor, and writer.

I am also an experienced speaker, lecturing on critical thought and skepticism, and debating issues in philosophy and history. I've appeared on the national television program Faith Under Fire, and debated issues before large audiences at UCLA and in Michigan. I have published several articles for the Skeptical Inquirer and other periodicals, as well the Secular Web. I served as Editor in Chief of the Secular Web for many years, and remain among the most read authors there, averaging ten thousand readers a month. I am currently writing my dissertation on Roman science at Columbia University.
