At the end of the Fall Term, 2004, the students of Perception (PSYC BC1108x and 1110x) reviewed the course. Among the questions they answered was, "What would you like to tell a student who is planning to enroll in this course next year?" If you are thinking of enrolling in Perception in the Fall of 2005 (or afterwards) you will be interested to see their repliesÉ

Do the reading and come to class; otherwise you are doomed.

Difficult exams.

Remez is great. I am not particularly interested in Psych, but he makes it a more enjoyable science req.

If you like to know material and not just memorize, this is the class for you. The Prof. is funny if a little elitist, he makes me laugh anyway.

Tough course, but not good if you aren't interested in experimental psych.

As far as instructors go, Professor Remez is well worth taking a class with, and the lab is boring but manageable.

Remez is great; keep up with readings throughout the semester. Go to office hours.

DON'T (enroll)

Good class overall, lots of useful info, super challenging tests but interesting lab.

Avoid if possible.

It's worth the laughs.

It's hard! Don't do it! Just kiddingÉ yes it is difficult but at the end of the day you start noting the little perceptions that you've taken for granted.

Don't believe everything on CULPA. I dreaded taking this class because of all the horrible things written about Remez and the course on CULPA. Honestly, I kind of enjoyed the course.

Take it! Pleasant and informative. Lab was fun!

The professor is amazing, but the class is very challenging, so be ready to work.

Only take it if you are prepared for the challenge! Remez is super nice outside of class - go to office hours!

Go to the lectures- Remez is a great speaker. Don't hassle him just because he makes slightly controversial/opinionated remarks - it's annoying to the rest of the class. And do all the reading since he considers everything fair game on the exams.

Go for it – don't be intimidated by Remez, as long as you're smart and can throw back what he gives out. Some people think he's an asshole. But I think he has an awesome sense of humor.

It's challenging and all the material/readings are important.

Read what's required and attend lecture: they're interesting!

Study, read the articles especially!

Do not procrastinate- keep an on top of your reading.

If you are really into grades this may not be the course for you. I enjoyed it but don't think I'll do well in the class. The exams can be difficult, even if you do study. But Prof Remez is delightful, if you don't mind his sense of humor.

Definitely take this course. Prof. Remez is funny, and he knows so much about perception. Still, you have to do all the work!

Do the reading and come to class- Remez makes most other instructors in the Psych Dept. look SO BORING.

This is a difficult but interesting course.

Good lectures, tough exams, great lab assistant I hope she stays at Barnard!

Remez is very smart, and it's an interesting class that I enjoyed going to. But be prepared to work hard and possibly do badly on the exams compared to other psychology classes. Nonetheless, I would recommend the class.

DON'T: The topic is interesting but the class is not worth it.

Definitely take it-- Study, for the exams, and be sure to attend the lectures because Prof. Remez is interesting and explains the concepts well.

It's the best Psych course I've taken here.

Yes

Difficult tests- easier as semester goes because of familiarity. Class and readings aren't always complementary so make sure you do both.

Just study your ass off and you'll be fine- don't blow off the readings! Lectures are also worth going to.

Tests are very hard - Hard to master a lot of material not much of which is covered in class.

Don't focus too much on the grade or you'll lose your mind.

He's funny- but do all the readings, the lectures won't get you through the exams.

Go for it.

Keep up with the readings. Work very hard.

Do all the reading before class. Then you'll have a sense of where the lecture is supposed to go- even if it doesn't get there and it probably won't.

Best course in the Psych department. Come to class, do the reading, and you will learn a lot and have fun too.

The course is not for someone who wants to get an easy A or does not want to attend the lectures and do the reading. But, I would recommend the class; it is challenging, informative and Professor Remez is very knowledgeable and engaging.

He seems really scary during the first class but, through the semester, you come to realize his love for teaching and even for learning. Yes, this was a science requirement for me but it became more than just a requirement. The professor is also really funny.
