Hemochromatosis

• Liver Disease: Hepatitis, Cirrhosis, Exacerbated by and potentiates Hep C and alcoholic liver diease

• HCC x20 (Elmberg et al GI 2003;125:1733-1741)

• Cardiac: Dilated Cardiomyopathy, Conduction (SSS), low intensity MRI

• Arthropathy: Chondrcalcinosis involving 2nd and 3rd MCP, classic radiologic findings “sqared off bone ends with hook-like osteophytes, unresponsive to chelation

• Dermatological:

• Hyperpigmentation: “bronze DM” secondary to iron deposition and melanin

• Porphyria cutanea carda

• Endocrine:

• DM: Deposition of iron beta cells with decreased insulin and C-peptide

• Hypogandism: Generally hypogoantotropic seccondary to deposition of iron in pituitary; occasionlly primary

• Hypothyroidism

• Hypoparathyroidism

• Infection: Salmonella, Klebsiella, Listeria, Rhizopus, Mucor, E coli, Vibrio fulnificus, Yersinia
