  Sources and Notes

The statistics provided here and in the Almanac are
meant to provide a broad view of higher education in
the 50 states and the District of Columbia and,
in all cases, were the latest available when posted
  on September 1, 1994.

The time covered by the statistics varies from item
to item. For example, the racial and ethnic
distribution of the adult population of the states was
gathered from the decennial census in 1990.

The U.S. Department of Education typically releases
statistics from its surveys of colleges and universities
one to three years after collecting the data. As a
consequence, the latest figures on college finances
  cover 1991-92.
