Uploading/Downloading Files on the Mac : (Using Fetch)

S. Sadi Seferoglu

In the Microcomputer Center, files can be uploaded/downloaded by using a program called FETCH. Fetch (FTP for the Macintosh) allows users to upload files between networked machines.

Once a file is uploaded, it can be sent through pine. When composing a message, insert the file in the "message text" (Press Control+R and then type file name when asked), or use attachment.

File Transfer on the MAC:

1- Open Fetch (It can be found on the Communications Folder)
2- Enter the information asked in the dialog box as in below, and then press Return key or click on OK button.

Host cunix.cc.columbia.edu (general)
www.columbia.edu (for Web)
User ID your userid Ex: sss31
Password your password Ex: My secret password
Directory leave blank or (public_html for the web)

3- Fetch will show you the list of the files and directories you have in your cunix account.
If you want to download/upload files from/to a subdirectory (i.e. public_html), open that subdirectory (folder) first!

4a- To Download: Select the file you would like to download by clicking on it, and then click on the Get File(s) button located on the right hand side of the dialog box. (To select multiple files, press and hold down the Shift key while clicking on the files one by one, or dragging the pointer.)
Once you pressed the Get File(s) button the program will ask you to specify the place where you want to put your file(s). Then click on Save button.
Users can also specify a file type for the files they download in the Fetch Preferences.

4b- To upload: Click on the Put File(s) button, and then locate the file(s) on the next dialog box, and press Open. Then user will be asked to specify a file format, and then press OK button.
For uploading image files (for www for instance), select "Raw Data" option.

Save file on cunix as:
Filename
Format: Text Cancel OK
MacBinary II
BinHex
Raw Data

Files can be formatted as Text, BinHex, or MacBinary II, etc. To upload a file in its original format (e.g. without saving a word-processing file as text-ASCII only), users can select BinHex option. This will preserve all formatting, and treat a file as text file when uploading.

5- Once you are done with downloading/uploading, click on Close Connection button located at the top right corner of the dialog box.

6- Go to file on the menu bar and Quit from Fetch.

PS. While in Fetch, files can be viewed, renamed, and deleted.
