Using Electronic Mail and Other Resources in UNIX (at the CUNIX Cluster)

S. Sadi Seferoglu

Introduction:

Teachers College students, faculty, and staff are entitled to free accounts on the Columbia University Academic Information Systems Computers. These accounts include electronic mail, spss statistical software, library information including periodical searches on such commercial services as ERIC, MEDLINE, and Psychological ABSTRACTS, and tools to access the internet.

The AcIS computer system includes a public information system called Columbianet which is accessible to anyone world-wide through the internet or dial-in. In addition to public information, a number of ÒprivateÓ services spawn off the Columbianet system requiring an id and password for access. These include e-mail services and spss on the cunix system as well as commercial library information services via the CLIO plus system. Teachers College constituents can create accounts and thereby obtain an id and password which provide authentication for most of the private services at Columbia.

Although Columbianet or private services can be accessed directly, it is recommended that you connect to the cunix service where you must enter an id and password. Columbianet, CLIO plus, and other services can be entered from cunix, but you will not have to provide authentication for any other services once you have first logged in to cunix.

Getting to the AcIS systems:

From a personal computer with a modem: Call (Columbia Unix at) 854-9924 or 854-3726 or 854-1896. After completing the dialing and getting connected, press <enter>. You will get a menu and a prompt, watts> or watts2>. At the watts(2)> prompt, login to (type in) ÒcunixÓ. At the prompt (login:) enter your userid, and then your password when asked. When asked, enter terminal type as VT100 or VT102.
Note: Make sure your communication program is configured for one of these terminal types.

On the Mac (at TC): From the Apple menu, run NCSA/BYU Telnet 2.5 and go to FILE from the Menu bar and select Open Connection (or just Press Command-O), then on the Session name type the address you wish to get connected, and press OK. (Ex: Cunix, ColumbiaNet, Cutcv2, Cutcsq and so on). At the prompt (login:, or username) enter your userid, and then your password when asked.

On the IBM (at TC): On the Novell Menu, select Network Connections, press Enter, and then select one of the options, such as TELNET to VAX, ColumbiaNet, or Internet, and press Enter. When selecting TELNET to Internet option, you will get MS-Kermit> prompt. At the prompt type set terminal type VT100 and press Enter. Then type TELNET and an Address. Ex: MS-Kermit>telnet cunix, (or telnet cutcv2, cutcsq).

Creating an Account:

At the login: prompt, type create and press Enter. There will be 3 options. Student Account, Instructional Account, and Faculty and Staff Account. Choose one of these options and follow instruction from the screen. (When creating an account, the user is asked to enter his/her name, the CUID, which is generally the SS#, and a password, which should be at least 6 characters long and a combination of letters and numbers.) Once you finish the process, you will see your userid which consists of your initials and a number. (Ex: sss31).

Your e-mail address is youruserid@columbia.edu. (Ex: sss31@columbia.edu)

Basic Accounts (Student accounts, and Faculty and Staff accounts) are free. Instructional accounts cost $45 per semester. Instructional accounts have 5 MB disk storage, unlimited connect time, and 100 sheets printer quotas. Basic accounts have 2 MB disk storage and a total of 3 hours of connect time, 1 hour prime-time, and 2 hours non prime-time connect. Prime-Time: Monday-Friday, 12 noon-7:00 PM. Weekends: Combined.

Logging in: At the "Login" prompt type your userid and press <enter>.

Logging out: Type logout or exit (Note: typing exit at the Watt> prompt should also disconnect you from Columbia and hang up your telephone line.)
