Research plan: Pure electron plasmas (1)
By tailoring ne(r), we can create unstable diocotron modes and study their behavior
- The diocotron mode is a fundamental mode in non-neutral plasmas, driven unstable by shear in _ExB, stabilized by close-fitting conducting walls
- A movable heated tungsten filament will be used to inject low energy electrons and control ne(r)
- By ramping the stellarator coil current we can investigate the effects of a rotational transform on the diocotron mode behavior
By tailoring Te(r), we can study kinetic effects and pressure driven instabilities
- ECRH will be used to heat electrons locally
