What is a stellarator? Why use a stellarator?
- Nested magnetic surfaces created entirely by external coils - magnetic surfaces exist even in vacuum.
- Ideal for low density discharges and pure electron discharges - the configuration requires no space charge or plasma current
- Inherently steady state - ideal for long experiments
- No need for internal (levitated) current carrying wires
- Complicated coils? Bad particle orbits?
