Challenges for pair plasma production
- Injection mechanism
- Create pure electron plasma first, then inject positrons at the edge
- Positron bunches are loaded onto magnetic surfaces using pulsed magnetic and/or electric fields (with J. Kremer)
- Electrostatic well created by electrons will make positrons diffuse towards inner magnetic surfaces
- Confinement issues
- Collisional transport is acceptable, even for CNT
- Turbulent transport may be serious problem: Using GS2 gyrokinetic code to determine microstability and transport (with B. Dorland)
- Instabilities goes away below a (reasonably high) density
- Bad orbits
- Incorporate quasi-symmetry, evaluate ripple (N. Pomphrey)
- Un-neutralized plasmas will benefit from ExB drift to get better orbits
