Science of the Atmosphere is a  bilingual (English and Spanish), interactive website designed to teach students, families, and educators about air pollution, climate change, and other atmospheric science topics

Lab Activities with the Double Discovery Center

The photos below are from our laboratory activity on nucleation with high school chemistry students from Columbia's Double Discovery Center on 07/25/08.

Prof. McNeill provides an introduction to atmospheric aerosols and cloud nucleation.

Lots of fizzing is observed when sugar or Mentos are added to carbonated drinks.

Not much fizzing is observed when gummy candies are used.

Julia explains that the fizzing is caused by the presence of nucleation sites, not a chemical reaction.

2 L of Diet Coke + 1 pack of Mentos =The Finale!
