I’m trying to understand the computations our brains use to think. I focus on sensory processing in particular. How do neural circuits infer the things out in the world from sense data?

Statistical inference is a principled framework for making sense of our sense data. I seek to predict how neural circuits would behave if they did perform or approximate inference, and I collaborate with experimentalists to test these predictions. This is interdisciplinary research that draws on neuroscience, physics, and computer science.
