al-Qur'an, Suras 1, 114, 112, 75, 68, 63, 56, 26, 17, 2-4

1) Consider the parallels and variations in the Genesis stories found in the Hebrew Bible and the Qur'an.  Pay particular attention to the stories of Adam and Eve, Abraham, and Noah, and to the account of Joseph.

2) How does the Qur'an integrate Old Testament and New Testament accounts, as well as Judaic and Christian beliefs?  In what ways is it anchored in the Judeo-Christian tradition?  In what ways does it move beyond it?

3) What is the relationship between divine omnipotence and human responsibility in the Qur'an?

4) Along with doctrinal teachings, the Qur'an contains many liturgical and legal and social prescriptions for the life of the community of Muslims.  What do these prescriptions consist of?  Consider rituals of prayer and worship, the fast of Ramadan, and the pilgrimage to Mecca.  How do such prescriptions relate to the laws and social codes found in Leviticus?
