Mark Borden Receives NIH Bioengineering Research Grant

09/14/2008

Prof. Mark Borden was recently awarded a major research grant (R01) from the NIBIB to investigate a novel application of microbubbles for medical imaging.  The technology involves an innovative surface architecture that allows microbubble adhesiveness to be altered using acoustic waves.  The new construct is being tested for reduced immunogenicity and ultrasound-triggered, site-specific adhesion for molecular imaging studies of cancer.

The grant is in collaboration with Prof. Paul Dayton at NCSU/UNC, who will co-engineer the high-frequency imaging system to take full advantage of these stimulus-responsive microbubbles.
