Joseph M. Murphy Award

C. Bruce Watterson

For nearly four decades, Bruce Watterson has never stopped helping students and other educators become better writers, editors and designers. Whether working at a rural high school, a large suburban high school, an historically black state university, a selective liberal arts  college or a private nonsectarian prep school,. Watterson has never wavered from his twin goals of modeling and teaching excellence. His professional experience has included journalism teaching, graphic design, college public relations, institutional advancement and fundraising.

He has continued to be of selfless service to the CSPA and many other groups in scholastic and collegiate journalism throughout his career. In recent years he has chaired the judging of CSPA’s Crown Awards with admirable diplomacy and unerring sensitivity. Wherever his career has taken him, he has never forgotten his roots as a teacher and adviser.

For unstinting dedication to the high ideals from which this Association has taken its inspiration, and for his never-ending willingness to develop the next editor, designer, or teacher of journalism, the Columbia Scholastic Press Association honors C. Bruce Watterson with its Joseph M. Murphy Award for Outstanding Service.

This citation was written by Edmund J. Sullivan, executive director of the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, and presented during the Advisers Awards luncheon on March 18, 2011 during CSPA's 87th annual Convention at Columbia University in New York City.
