2009 2nd Series Scholastic Circle Recipients

CSPA presents 1,315 Gold Circle Awards to Student Journalists for newspapers and magazines in schools and colleges

NEW YORK, NY — The Columbia Scholastic Press Association has announced the winners from the newspaper and magazine categories of its 27th Gold Circle Awards program.   This first portion of the Gold Circle Awards attracted 8,091 entries from colleges, universities and secondary schools throughout the United States. Begun in 1984, these awards celebrate individual achievement by student writers, editors, designers and photographers.

Previously, all categories of the Gold Circle Awards were collected annually in November for winter judging. All awards were announced the following March. This year, the existing categories are being collected in two separate batches. Newspaper and magazine categories were collected in June 2009 and judged during the summer. These are the awards being announced at this time.

Yearbook, online and broadcast categories are due to be postmarked to the CSPA by October 30th. They will be judged as in the past in winter and announced by March 2010.

Since the CSPA dates its awards by the year in which they are given, these awards represent the second series of 2009 Gold Circle Awards. The 2009 Gold Circle Awards already given last March represent winners from entries published from November 2, 2007 through November 1, 2008. Today's awards represent entries published in newspapers or magazines from November 2, 2008 through June 15, 2009. The June 15th deadline will remain in place for the foreseeable future for newspaper and magazine categories.

Student journalists submitting entries into the awards chose from as many as 155 available categories for individual or staff entries in newspaper and magazine.     All awards will be mailed to the publications during November.

The complete listing of awards can be found on this Gold Circle recipients page. Please look for either “Scholastic” or “Collegiate” for appropriate results. Archive files of prior years’ awards are also available at that website.
