SPR: Student Press Review — August 2007

CSPA goes to Broadway

To learn first hand how story telling, singing and dancing connect in musical theatre, 280 students and teachers from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s 26th annual Summer Workshop spent a day together on Broadway and attended a performance of “Hairspray.”

'Hairspray' a sparkling package of fun

If based solely on its plot, “Hairspray” sounds as though it has the potential to be overly trite and clichéd.

A naïve but optimistic teen-ager uses music and dancing to achieve her dreams of stardom and social justice, overcoming the mean popular girl and winning the boy of her dreams.

'Hairspray' keeps it fresh

One can always watch a film in the comfort of home.

Like a print publication, a film stays the same.

But the audience for a Broadway play can take away memories of a magical experience that happens just once.
