To learn first hand how story telling, singing and dancing connect in musical theatre, 280 students and teachers from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s 26th annual Summer Workshop spent a day together on Broadway and attended a performance of “Hairspray.”
If based solely on its plot, “Hairspray” sounds as though it has the potential to be overly trite and clichéd.
A naïve but optimistic teen-ager uses music and dancing to achieve her
dreams of stardom and social justice, overcoming the mean popular girl
and winning the boy of her dreams.
One can always watch a film in the comfort of home.
Like a print publication, a film stays the same.
But the audience for a Broadway play can take away memories of a magical experience that happens just once.
