Longtime SCSPA/SIPA director to be honored by CSPAA
By CSPA Staff

Karen FlowersThe Columbia Scholastic Press Advisers Association (CSPAA) will present the 2010 James Frederick Paschal Award to Karen Flowers for outstanding service to a state scholastic press association.

The award will be presented during a special Advisers Awards Luncheon on Friday, March 19, 2010 in the Rotunda of Low Memorial Libray on the Columbia University campus in New York City. The luncheon is presented as part of CSPA's 86th annual Convention, taking place from March 17-19, 2010 at Columbia University.

Flowers, the director of the South Carolina Scholastic Press Association (SCSPA) and of the Southern Interscholastic Press Association (SIPA), has been active in student journalism for over 35 years.

A former classroom teacher and newspaper adviser, Flowers also directs the Carolina Journalism Institute, is the chair of the Teaching Standards Committee of the AEJMC and serves as the state director for the Journalism Education Association.

The award is named for the late James Frederick Paschal, a former director of the Oklahoma Interscholastic Press Association and a former editor of The CSPAA Bulletin, and honors state or regional school press association officials who have distinguished themselves in the field.

Consideration for the Paschal award is based on the following:

  • Length of service to the school press field;
  • Accomplishments made during that tenure;
  • Innovative concepts from which scholastic journalism has received something beneficial; and
  • Recognition by members of the state press association with which the official has been associated.

A limited number of seats are still available for the Friday, March 19th luncheon. While the luncheon is free to attend for registered advisers, each person must reserve their seat in advance for the luncheon. Click here for more information on the Convention and registration details.
