Physical Education

Students are classified for Physical Education by the Director of the University Health Services (3rd floor, John Jay, 854-2281). The classification is based on the Health Questionnaire/ Physical Exam Form that all students must submit to the Health Service. All Columbia College students have a two semester physical education requirement and are also required to pass a swimming test (or submit a waiver from the University Health Service), prior to graduation. The swimming test is administered the first day of physical education classes and periodically throughout the semester. The test consists of swimming three laps of the pool (75 yards) without resting, using any stroke or combination of strokes. Those students who do not pass the test are encouraged to take beginning swimming at the first opportunity. The focus of this requirement is to make our students safe in, on, and around water. Barnard, Engineering, and General Study students do not have this requirement. The program offers a variety of activities in the areas of aquatics, fitness, martial arts, individual and dual "lifetime" sports, dance and team sports. The majority of our instructors are trained professionals and are familiar with the safety hazards of those activities. For many of the activities, we have posted rules that include safety precautions. Several times each year, all the instructors that teach a particular activity meet to review the course. During these sessions, safety issues are addressed. Periodically, the Supervisor of the Program or the Department Chair will observe classes. If anything can be improved upon (including the area of safety), appropriate changes will be discussed and implemented. During the initial staff meeting, instructors receive specific guidelines on the procedures to follow if a student is injured. These procedures are clearly spelled out in the staff manual. There is always someone on duty in the Physical Education Office or at the Front Desk when classes are in session. The individual on duty is trained to assist the instructor in the event that a student is injured. There are several first-aid kits located throughout the facility (building supervisors' office, Levien Pool, and the Physical Education Office). Finally all injuries are recorded in a book kept in the Physical Education Office listing information about the person, nature of the injury, and the person reporting the injury. If needed, all personnel should follow the emergency protocol for the building.
