condition of the camps. One of our immigration officers went up to that area. He was used to having things right and orderly. He reported, “Those camps are in terrible condition.”
I said to General Glassford to the telephone, “I hear the compare bad, dirty.”
“Well,” he said, “Miss Perkins, what can you expect? These Mexicans don't know any other way to live. You know that. There's no sense in building them an American standard with plumbing fixtures type of room. They don't know how to use it. They don't know what to do with a place like that. They've got a lot of children, a lot of dogs, a lot of chickens. They're just going to live that way anyhow, live like nomads. That's all right. They get enough to eat. They get enough wages now so they can buy something. They get clean water. I've seen to that. If there's any sickness, I've made the farmers take them to nearest hospital. We're not going to have any epidemic break out.”
Anyhow, he was very much a law unto himself. I've forgotten how long he stayed there, but peace came to the valleys in no time at all. It was all over. Everything was working beautifully. General Glassford was riding around to see that it did. Of course, when the fun was over, I expected that he wouldn't want to go on any longer.
