In most of NYC, walking is the best way to get around short distances!

Taxis are plentiful (12,000!). The price of a taxi is $2.50 upon entry and then $0.40 for each additional unit. The unit fare is based upon: increments of one-fifth of a mile, when the taxicab is traveling at 6 miles an hour or more; or 60 seconds when not in motion or traveling at less than 12 miles per hour. Taxis also have the following surcharges:
- night surcharge of $.50 after 8:00 PM & before 6:00 AM
- peak hour Weekday Surcharge of $1.00 Monday - Friday after 4:00 PM & before 8:00 PM

The
subway is the most efficient for of transportation in NYC and the Metrocard is the most convenient form of payment (as well as allowing you to transfer from bus to subway). The
bus is more scenic, but slower. There are online
maps of the routes.

The Columbia University subway stop is at 116th Street and Broadway (and shown as the 116th Street stop) and is serviced by the
Number One line subway trains. Make sure you are traveling on the Number One line uptown to the 116th Street stop. The buses that serve the Columbia area are the
M11 (on Amsterdam Avenue), the
M4 and the
M104 (on Broadway). Buses generally stop every two blocks or so.

The fare is $2.25. When you pay with MetroCard, you have choices that can result in your paying less than $2.25.

Unlimited Ride MetroCard lets you ride all you want for one price. The more you ride the less each ride costs. You can buy 7-Day and 30-Day MetroCards or 30-Day Express Bus Plus MetroCard.
