The department congratulates Bernd Beber (Ph.D. 2009) on winning the 2009 Peace Science Society Stuart A. Bremer Award for Best Graduate Student Paper.  The Bremer Award is presented to the author or authors of the best graduate student paper delivered at each year's Peace Science Society meeting.

The author of the winning paper receives travel support to present the paper at the following year's European Peace Science meeting.  The winner is selected on the basis of the paper's potential scientific significance and its contribution to the study of peace science.

Beber's paper argues that mediation in post-Cold War conflicts has been effective, but that its effectiveness becomes apparent only when adjustment is made for selection biases that result from differences in mediators' decisions to offer assistance.  Click here to read the paper.

Beber has recently been appointed Assistant Professor of Politics at New York University.
